Figured I’d share.

So I’ve always had this theory that instead of bands trying to write songs (or “hits”) that EVERYONE will like, they should be writing songs that THEY like, and then going out to find everyone that likes their songs too.  It just makes more sense to me.  Where is the longevity, creativity, or enjoyment in just trying to please everyone else?

Well this week I was talking to someone who I had recently met, and while getting to know them our conversation led to this person making a statement along the lines of “Well I don’t want to tell you so much about me, because I’m afraid you won’t want to be friends if I tell you too much.”  I thought for a second and then responded with,

“Why don’t you tell me the LAST thing you would ever want me to know about you.  What do you have to lose? If I’m some sort of person that would decide not to be your friend after that, then 1. your life goes back to the way it was just the other day before we met (no big deal), and 2. I’m not someone you should want to be friends with.  BUT If I don’t care about whatever it is you don’t want me to know, then there are now no walls in this friendship, and you’ll never feel that pressure or stress again.”

I don’t think anyone should ever be worried about presenting themselves for anything but who they are.  Take the stress off yourself and just worry about the people who are going to like you for who you are.  Don’t worry about holding yourself back in conversation and/or relationships because you’re scared that the other person might not like it.

This whole thing made me think back to my theory of how bands should be finding/getting their fans, and turns out it rings just as true for people and how they should be finding/relating to others.  Try it.
